Bears had Cutler which is arguably the best qb to ever play for the bears. Why they never gave him more offensive pieces is beyond me. But Williams is not the answer, nor is maye u til they shore up that o line

... For me it isn't argumentative, Cutler is by far the best QB since I became a fan in 1978. But he went through a new offensive scheme every year and 4 new OC's. The line held consistently for 3.5 seconds and that's plenty of time for any NFL QB (other than Fields) to get rid of the ball. That said as someone that played QB through college, you can never have enough good OLineman and hopefully the Bears take a stud LT at #9.

... We will just have to disagree as I have watched Fields in horror for 3 years constantly screaming at my TV "THROW THE BALL, HE IS WIDE OPEN!!!" and then watched him get sacked after well over 3.5 seconds. So Williams or Maye are most definitely the answer to the question of trade the pick and keep Fields or actually get an NFL QB that gives your team a chance to win. I think you are just trolling as a Packers fan and wanna see Fields stay in Chicago. 🤪

If ever there was a qb I wanted to stay in Chicago, it was good ol Jay. Dude was the 3rd or 4th best qb to play for GB in the past 30 years. He knew how to throw to the defenders just as well as his wide receivers against Green Bay.

... On that we agree. Fields only strength is his running ability and Getsy wanted him to stay in the pocket where he was at his worst. All good coaches adjust their scheme to fit their players and all bad coaches adjust their players to fit their scheme. Mike Martz said Cutler was the best QB he ever coached and he didn't have the Oline or speedy WR's to run his "greatest show on turf" scheme with lots of down field routes but tried to force Cutler and the Bears offense into his scheme. Said if he could do it over he would have tailored his scheme to fit the offense he had in Chicago and really regrets it and has apologized to Cutler several times.

This the same Cutler you're talking about? I'm all about recognizing talent when we talk about "bests", so long as we also recognize effort, attitude, and results. I'd pick Jim McMahon in that time frame but "who was the biggest wasted talent" isn't a particularly fun topic for me.

Unless we're talking about the Lions. Then we have PLENTY of material to chat about 🤣.

Fields is a mobile qb. That’s where he thrives and proved that in college. Mahomes is a mobile qb in the sense that he can move around and still find his receivers. There’s a reason GB didn’t resign ESB. He’s just not good, his brother is better. Montgomery is showing what he can do as a RB in Detroit after Chicago let him go.

I’ve talked with my friends who are Chicago fans, I’ve said it to them and I’ll say it until I’m blue in the face. The bears won’t do much of anything until you have a new owner.

Dan Campbell: I love you and hate you at the same time. Yes, going for it on 4th down had worked for us a bunch this season. However this was the damn NFC championship homie. Kick the FG and we were driving to tie the game, or maybe even go for 2 and win. Instead, we were driving for the chance at a near-impossible onside kick.

Josh Reynolds: I don't hate you, but I hate your hands today.

Maybe it's because I'm not used to seeing my team win in the playoffs, but I felt like this was a once in a lifetime chance to make it to the Super Bowl.  Our team is pretty good, and young, but IMO without one of those crazy playmaking franchise quarterbacks, and a killer defense, you're just doomed for mediocrity. It's so hard to win in the NFL. Devastated but at the same time thrilled that my squad won a playoff game in my adult life, and even added a 2nd! I hope we can be in the mix for a few more years.

Finally, I would like to end this by saying F*CK THAT STUPID CATCH OFF VILDOR'S FACEMASK BRO THAT SH*T ONLY HAPPENS TO THE LIONS I AM UPSET.

Disappointment here in the Motor City due to the outcome, but knowing Dan Campbell and his analytics for going for it on 4th down, and his "track record" of how many times it has happened, it was not surprising to see him keep that aggre4ssiveness in this game.

But there is also hope for the future, as these players are young and hungry, and an appreciation of what they accomplished this year. The division title was the goal, with a play-off game, and they exceeded those expectations.

They also have proven they can play with, and stay with the better teams in the league, so the future here is very bright.

It may be hard to think about, but what could you see the Lions improving on in the off-season? I was rooting for them after the Raiders dysfunctional season and wanted to see a team that has been struggling win it all this year. I like the teams chemistry so maybe they will just stay the course 🤔

I was rooting for the Lions! They had an excellent season. I really do like Campbell's dont-quit personality. After years of bad teams, I am happy to see them have success and I really would like to see them win a Superbowl.

Need another defensive lineman like Hutchinson and cornerbacks.

I believe they will address the defense in the off season through the draft and a possible free agent.

Definitely need to upgrade at CB.  I think I read where Reynolds becomes a FA so will be interesting how that plats out.   His first drop would have been a tough catch, the second was inexcusable.

As for Campbell going for it at the end, it would have been a 48 yarder and I don’t think he has confidence in Badgley from beyond 40.  Plus, and I think this is reasonable, the previous 2 times they got the play they wanted, albeit drops.  I think they expected to get the play they wanted, but the last time Goff got flushed.

The killer was the drops.  And the long completion off the defenders face mask, immediately followed by the fumble.  Take away any one of those and who knows.  Great season but the lions for the last X games have stalled offensively in the second half.

My biggest concern is who will replace Ben Johnson assuming he becomes a HC?

In other developing news, the tigers may have gotten the deal of the century by signing Colt Keith to a 9 year, $82M contract, the first 6 guaranteed and the last 3 team options.  First year he will be paid $2.5M.  He likely gets his first mlb at bat this spring.

Yep. And it's a sad history the Falcons came into the league in 1966 and Mike Smith, hired in 2008, was the first coach to have back-to-back winning seasons.

Falcons have a rough go, but it's all part of the ride! KC for years were terrible and the list goes on.

Being a fan of any NFL franchise means taking the good years with the bad years and feeling elated and heartbroken with every move and season.

If you have a couple hours to kill, I HIGHLY recommend Dorktown's YouTube series on the history of the Falcons.  Its both entertaining AND incredibly depressing, but hey, thats the life of an Atlanta sports fan (save for the Braves)! 🤣

... Goff reminds me of Cousins. First he has improved so much and part of the reason the Lions were in the play offs. Give him time and protection and he will pick you apart. Sadly many QB's in the NFL can play really under those circumstances. But under pressure or on the run and his proficiency drops precipitously and he has not played well in the really big games. Like Cousins he can put up big numbers and both are too good to replace with just another QB that may be Zach Wilson or Desmond Ridder or Trey Lance. It is a real conundrum for the good teams. I think Cousins and Goff can win a SB IF they get the protection they need but the Mahomes, Allens and even the Purdy's that seem immune to pressure and can consistently move around the pocket and avoid the rush throwing accurately out of the pocket after it breaks down give their team a much better chance at the final trophy.

... Of course the problem is finding one of them. I have a strong feeling two of them will be available in April and maybe three. I doubt the Bears or Commanders will take a trade for Williams and Maye as it would have to be an off the charts enticing offer. Maybe NE takes a kings ransom for Daniels but he is the potential 3rd franchise QB and they are badly in need of a QB. Of course Goff was the first pick in the 2016 draft so there are no guarantees. Interesting the 3 top passing yardage leaders all faltered in the playoffs 1. Tagovialoa 2. Goff 3. Prescott. Most difficult position to excel in sports and equaled with the difficulty of drafting the right one.

But there is also hope for the future, as these players are young and hungry, and an appreciation of what they accomplished this year. The division title was the goal, with a play-off game, and they exceeded those expectations.

They also have proven they can play with, and stay with the better teams in the league, so the future here is very bright.

It was definitely working for us all year but in the NFC championship I'm trying that FG.

It may be hard to think about, but what could you see the Lions improving on in the off-season? I was rooting for them after the Raiders dysfunctional season and wanted to see a team that has been struggling win it all this year. I like the teams chemistry so maybe they will just stay the course 🤔

@rkj427 hit it on the screws, we need to bolster up our secondary and pass rush. Also we need better face masks on our helmets. Ones that don't deflect the ball to be catchable by our opponents

... High School Conference Championship game 1971. I talked the coach into a play put in specifically for that game where I fake a pitch to a sweep left and then roll out right looking at a post and fly down the right side to manipulate the safety. Then throw back down the left sideline to the RB that continued downfield after the fake sweep and I hit him dead injured stride with a 60yd 💣 winning TD pass. 🥳 Or so we thought. It bounced off his facemask 😱  Coach ran the film back 10 times Monday and said "Presley, Derence hit you with a perfect pass and you dropped it 10 times. So you will be running 10 one hundred yd sprints before we start practice for every pass you dropped." Somehow he was mad at me and not the coach. 🤣

Sounds to me like he only had himself to be mad at. The guy dropped a 60 yard dime! Shame on him.

@berkeleybob and @yungkory looks like a major piece of the Lions coaching staff is returning........................ pretty certain those teams that waited to interview him in person are not quite happy with this decision.

Most had him pegged for Washington but he informed Washington and Seattle today. They could have, and possibly did interview him as Atlanta did on the Sunday after the lions beat Tampa bay.  Last week after Sunday was a blackout for playoff coaches but this week they could have interviewed until the end of this week if the lions had won.  I have a feeling the lions are giving him a nice raise and deservedly so. The lions DC has taken some heat but I think most recognize he did quite well with what he has had to work with.

... I have played for good coaches and it is so rewarding. I have played for bad coaches and it is a miserable experience. I can't imagine coaching for a terrible owner and/or a bad organization. Gotta applaud Ben for being a very mature young man that knows power and money are useless if you aren't happy.

I'm looking forward to having a good rival in the NFC north to battle it out with. I don't think Detroit is going to go anywhere, and Green Bay is only going to get better. Great young core Detroit has, they just need to work on tackling in open space.

I hate the Commanders so much.

Of all the teams as a young boy I chose to support why did it have to be them? I could have been a Bills fan or something else with a fun fanbase and hope, even if it gets crushed. Now I've suffered through the worst owner in professional sports and just when you think it's coming around the corner, that we're getting a young exciting head coach to lead the team into a new era of something at least resembling competitive and fun football... surprise, it's ol' 28-3 himself Dan Quinn. My excitement for this franchise in 2024 and the future just got kicked square between the legs.

I hate you Commanders... so much

K this may belong in the Random thread, and just passing it along...

fyi was reading a news article this morning that was talking about current conspiracy theories related to the Super Bowl - eg. KC win was "engineered" to ultimately get Taylor Swift an even larger audience (if that's even possible) to put her into a position to influence more people if she were to let drop any hints related to the November elections....
