What's your favorite category of clubs?

1. Drivers- It could be the latest drivers with the best golf shafts or the many features that they come with.

2. Fairway woods/fairway woods- Is it the current woods out there that have seen many improvements over the years or is it the uniqueness of a hybrid.

3. Irons- Is it the joy of getting a brand new iron set with custom lie, loft, shaft, grip, etc.

4. Wedge- Is it appealing to get a wedge with custom stamps on it and being able to have the same custom features that an iron can have.

5. Putter- Or is it the putter that can be put into any form and be offered in so many options.

Think of it this way too. If someone gave you $5000 or whatever amount of money you want, and they said you could go and buy whatever you wanted but it had to be the same category of clubs, what would you pick?

Interesting question.

I love a good wedge. There's just something about grabbing one and feeling that perfect weight, then laying it down and getting the feel of a great grind. Then tossing a few balls down by the green with your new toy and watching that ball check those first few times like it never will again, knowing that you are going to play that thing way past when you should because it is your friend and even though it doesn't zip like it used to its been with you through thick and thin. . .

Until one day you pick up a another wedge in the store.. . not buying, just looking, the current wedge is fine. . .but . . .damn that feels good! My grooves are worn. . hell, that thing is 3 years old! And look at it spin!!

But if I had money to play with, it'd be irons I'd buy, no question about that at all.

My 2 favourite clubs are my 5 & 7 irons. The 2 iron used to be a member of this list but the Adams Idea Pro A12 has replaced it.

Putter. I love me a good putter and I love all the different types of putters and all the technology and thought that goes into such a simple thing.

If I'm understanding the question rightly it's what's your favorite club to go spend money on. For me that would be the driver. I've had the same irons for 10 years, hybrids for 6, putter for 5. I did just get a new fairway wood to replace one that was 7 years old. Drivers that's another matter altogether - I've been in Florida for 6 plus years and I'm on driver number 5! I love the driver - odd given that I'm not that long but I am straight and know the value of that tee shot for setting up the hole.

If the question were which is your favorite club in the bag my answer would be putter.

And you'll have to ask Matt about the 5k to spend part - I "only" have $3,500. B)

(Still in shock to think about it.)

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

Irons. Definitely Irons. I'm gaming my 4th set of irons this season alone....and I've tried 5 other sets on the range.

That's interesting BK because I hate switching irons. For me, it takes a solid month to even start to gain confidence in a new set of irons. Dialing in distances and getting a feel for trajectory and turf interaction and all that takes me some time, I don't even really consider them broken in until I've played them a season! I play my irons for years but I switch wedges, putters and drivers at least every couple seasons and usually more.

It's an interesting/unusual year for me. I typically go 4-6 years or more between iron changes.

At the end of last season I decided to ditch the MB's I was playing for a set of Nike VR Full Cavities. I thought I wanted more forgiveness. I played a few rounds this spring with them. But shortly after I got a smoking deal on the new VRII Full Cavities. So I upgraded. Turns out I didn't really hit either of the GI's any better than MB's.... and I missed playing MB irons. Sooooooo I made up a set of the Nike TW Forged...and I do love them....but.....this last iron change is partly your fault. You got into my head about not hitting the Nike forged consistently.....soooooo..... I made up a set of Titleist 735 CM's and put them in my bag today. They played real nice too.....and I dare say....slightly better in the longer irons (5 & 6). I do expect to play one of these 2 sets for a long time....maybe....we'll see ;)

Wow....this seems kinda neurotic now that I type it out....oh well.

I absolutelly would rather hit an iron rather than any other club. The good news is because of that I am hitting more irons off tees and leaving myself full shots to the green. I am turning into an excellent iron player, to the detriment of my wedges some because I do not hit them as often, but I do not need to.

I have recently adopted a driver swing simular to my iron swing in that it focuses on consistency over distance. But I would still rather it an iron.

I am trying to develop a love for putting and putters, but I have not really accomplished that yet.

Edit: It is the feel of a well struck ball off the center face of a muscleback is like that of no other iron. I think I can feel the ball compress off the face. I have no idea how much is real and how much imagined but it makes no difference.

Interesting responses. For me, I can't imagine having multiple sets of irons and changing from round to round. There's probably no reason why I couldn't, but I just would find it disconcerting.

My answer is putters. I love putters. I could spend $5,000 on putters in the blink of an eye.

Drivers are the bane of my golf existence. FWs and hybrids...meh. I do like wedges, but I like to play the same wedges all the time, not change.

BK, I should really put a disclaimer in my signature warning people not to listen to anything I say! Doing so is a good way to screw your game up for several months! I just this week completely destroyed one of my rivals short game by pointing out that he was hitting his full shot wedges wrong. He lost his semifinal match play match today. Reports are that he shot 90 and was shanking balls all over. So you've been warned!

If I spent $5000 I would only have one eye to blink. The good wife would have the other one swollen shut.

I had two sets of irons that I was playing for a while. The Mizuno MP62's and the Hogan CFT cavity backs. I like the shafts (C Tapers) I had in the Hogans better than the X100s I had in the Mizzies, but like the Mizzies better. Solution, swap the shafts. However, it has been two weeks and I have yet to reassemble the Hogans. The Mizzies are getting old enough and showing some damage from regular use that it will not be long unti I can abandon those stupid iron covers. But I have gotten used to no chatter from the bag.

I put C Tapers in a 3 wood and a hybrid today and I liked them a lot the few times I swung them.

Bookends.

I like the Driver and I like the putter- but in opposite ways. I tend to go through lots of drivers, I just love all the options and styles and the never ending search for the perfect drive. It's like a game within the game....

Putters I like because I hold on to them for years and years and years. They become like old friends and can be very difficult to let go. Since 1986 I have owned exactly 4 putters. One I just bought a few months ago. Two and Three I still have, and the fourth I would still have but it was stolen.

But for the poll its the driver.

In Play

Driver: Cleveland Classic XL Custom 9.5*, Woods: Cobra Baffler T-Rail 5W, 7W, Hybrids:Callaway FTiz 27* Irons: Maruman Shuttle 7-S, Wedge: Cleveland Niblick 49*, Callaway Jaws CC 60*, Putter: Ping Scottsdale Wolverine

Warming the bench

i would say my favourite clubs on the course at this point, would have to be my hybrids.

but as for the purpose of this thread, i would have to go with putters.

In my Clicgear B3 cart bag on my Clicgear 3.0 pushcart:

Rocketballz 10.5* stock stiff shaft

Adams Idea A3 Boxer 19*

TMag Rocketbladez 4i-6i

Mizuno MP53 7i-PW

Mizuno MP-R12 52*, MP-T11 56*, MP-T10 60*

Some old Odyssey putter (Don't laugh, it gets the ball in the hole nicely)

Bridgestone E6

Walking on air with my True Tours and Kentwool socks

No-one will ever have golf under his thumb. No round ever will be so good it could not have been better. Perhaps this is why golf is the greatest of games. You are not playing a human adversary; you are playing a game. You are playing old man par.

Bobby Jones

You swing your best when you have the fewest things to think about.

For as much as everyone seems to change drivers, I'm a little surprised that they didn't get more love.

Fairways & Greens 4ever

I hate the driver. You can almost get in more trouble with a driver than telling you wife that those jeans are not very slimming. :). The driver is a necessary evil and is used to get into a good position to hit the beloved irons. Then the love/hate relationship of the putter comes out.

However I guess that depends on the irons. Some drunk left his clubs in the bar last week and they were still there today so I took his Razr Forged 6iron out and hit it. I did not love it. Maybe someday he wil notice them missing and come get them.

I totally feel you man. I also go through a lot of drivers through the season, trying to find THE one...

But the driver is also the stick that gets me into most trouble, so my go-to club is an iron.
