My company does a few things. We have biometric screening which is mandatory or you have to have your doctor do it. If not your premium goes up by $40.00 a month. A company actually comes to the office to do it. Then once a month we have blood pressure checks on site. Then they offer free gym memberships. But you have to go three times a week and submit a copy of the log sheet. We have weight loss team competitions over the course of a few months. Four man teams and the winning team gets cash. Something like $250 per person. They did the hypnosis for smokers and a weight watcher program. All in house. One time we had a travel across the country contest. People had the step trackers and also was a 4 man team. At the end of the week your turned in your steps and they drew a line on a map of the US. First team to get to X got a big cash payout.

In turn people got healthier and the company's insurance premium went down.

Which is all awesome! We have done many challenges similar. I run a weight loss challenge every year with a monetary buy in every year, and have a hard time getting people to sign up. It’s pretty sad to say, but many people that work in healthcare are not the example of health for patients. I don’t know this exact number but I’m sure I could pull it from our annual HRA review, but I would venture to say that 60% or greater of our employee base at the hospital are in the overweight/obese category. It’s a challenging thing to get motivated to improve their overall health. The other thing that always makes me laugh (cynically), is that when they answer some questions for a required survey before the biometric screening, the top answers submitted by our employees are get more active, lose weight, improve nutritional habits. We build education and challenges around that, and a minuscule amount of our employee base participates. Then some of them wonder why their health score decreases every year. It’s a challenging cycle to break.

It's a life choice that only the person can make. Unfortunately sometimes it takes something bad to happen before they wake up and get their act together. Seen it to many times.

Same, and it really is unfortunate. Pre diabetes is a climbing issue among our employee population. We offer a lifestyle change program in house that I lead with our dieticians and employees who qualify can participle free. None sign up. It’s just hard for me to understand and figure out.

Huh, I would think a free program like that would be very popular.

The Airbnb ceo just used the word "modulated" multiple times when talking about prices, in such a way that made me now consider him the human form of Marvin the Martian. They should invent a feature on their website called the "price modulator" so he can do another interview and say it 50 more times. I find it hilarious.

Aside: "modulated" and "modulator" are fun to say/sing repeatedly I can attest.

A neighbor and I went to the NCAA Women’s Regional golf tournament at UGA today. We were only there a few hours, but we saw some pretty good golf. I think we may have been the only spectators there just to watch. Everyone else watching seemed to have an association with a player.

The first group out and looking over the green towards the tee box on 13.

There was a series on Dilbert featuring Dogbert and the  "CEO Mission Statement Generator" .. it took a bunch of au currante buzzwords, mixed them together and spit out an overly wrought opaque verbose mess .. hilarious!!

I would welcome some extra prayers for my community today. There was a horrific accident this morning on a busy highway just outside of our town. A bus was stopped to pick up a child, and a driver was either distracted and swerved to miss the bus or just did not stop and attempted to go around the bus and struck a child walking to get on the bus. The child was med flighted to UW, but the last I've heard did not survive.

I am so sick of people not respecting stopped school buses. Before we moved to our home on the golf course, there was a bus stop on the road near our other home that went past the hospital. I always make a point to stop well behind a bus and go as far as turning my flashers on to make sure other drivers know I was stopped. Nearly every time, a vehicle would pass me and the bus. There is never something so urgent that you need to get to that you can't wait 45 seconds for a bus to pick up a student. Just as a text or whatever crap on your phone is not worth a life.

A child was taken from a family today due to either negligence or impatient driving. Both are 100% unacceptable.

Senseless and completely preventable but only IF those who are self absorbed can be made to realize their behavior is dangerous.

Stress trigger follows so please don't read if that is a concern for you.

I mentioned last week when Jason had a tragedy at his workplace parking lot that I witnessed such a thing in front of the school where I had my first teaching job during the first month of the school year, in clear dry sunny conditions.  She was a 13 year old student leaving school and had to wait for traffic to stop or clear, to finish crossing the busy 4 lane road with a traffic light that was supposed to help her cross safely.  She stood in the center turn lane directly in front of the school with her backback over her shoulder and sweater in her arms.  Two older students, brothers with powerful cars left the student parking lot one behind the other intent to be first wherever they were going, the one behind going into the center turn lane to overtake the other and the stopped traffic.  She had no chance to react and nowhere to go.  She died a few minutes later, his car bearing evidence of the crime.  We held up blankets to provide her final dignity as paramedics did what little they could.  I cannot see a Buick Grand National without remembering it all.  PTSD is not reserved for combat soldiers.

These are absolutely horrible incidents, and not that I didn't care before but hits so much closer to home now that I have kids of my own. No parent should ever have to bury their kids. I couldn't imagine and never want to experience that type of pain. Thoughts and prayers go out to all who have lost a child.

In an update to this story, it was negligence. The driver tried to avoid hitting the bus, side swiped it, and veered into the gravel along the side of the road and over a driveway. I do not even know if the child struck was in the road, but possibly in their own driveway. The child was pronounced dead at the scene, so my earlier statement of med flight was false and for that I apologize. I was just sharing what knowledge (or lack thereof) I had seen. It was a middle school student and one of my best friends is a teacher there. Just an absolutely awful and completely preventable tragedy for our community. My heart hurts and I am sick to my stomach. As @tommyb1683 said, a parent should NEVER have to bury their child. I have seen the trauma and pain this causes as 4 years ago my 16 year old cousin was killed in a car accident. My uncle has lived with that pain ever since, and I honestly don’t know how he’s gotten through it.

The worst part about this is that no matter what happens to the person who was driving that car. It will never bring back that families child and they will always have that hurt like you explained. My heart also breaks for them.

I'm so sorry to hear about this Jason and my heart goes out to your community for this tragic loss of a child's life. Someone driving around a school bus whether they're in a hurry or distracted is completely unacceptable. It's sad to see that people disrespect human life so much because they're trying to save a minute. I feel so bad for that little girl's family and especially considering Mother's Day is this weekend. It just breaks my heart.

What're your thoughts on the "Honor System" for golf course rates? I am currently staying with my grandma and there is a golf course with sand greens behind her house. I looked up the course online and I saw that there is an honor system, so you just pay what you think you should pay and walk out onto the course. I want to play golf tomorrow morning before my grandma wakes up, and I figured that I would go out and play a quick round.

If you like the idea of this system, what do you think the minimum payment should be to play? Would you pay if you only walked?

How I'd approach it is I'd wait to pay until after I play the first time. If I like it and it looks like they maintain the place or are trying I would probably pay $10-20. If it's run down, overgrown, or I hate it I'd never go back and pay $0 so only a loss of my time.

Airing some work grievances this morning to vent some frustration. I am the employee health and wellness coordinator at a community hospital in my town, and part of my job, as you'd assume, is to try and provide employees with opportunities to improve their health. One of my primary and most important roles is coordinating annual HRA/Biometric screenings. This provides our employees with an outlook and clear picture of their overall health. Based on aggregate data results, I then try to customize health and fitness related challenges and monthly education topics to fit the areas of most needed improvement (prediabetes, high blood pressure, etc.).

May is Global Employee Health & Fitness month, and myself and our wellness committee came up with what I thought would be a cool challenge called Wellness BINGO, where a bingo card is created with different activities you can do to earn "tickets" into raffle prize drawings at the end of the month. Things like getting 10k steps in a day, eating a salad with a meal, attending a free exercise class we offer on-site, etc. Out of 600+ employees, I had 17 bingo cards turned in. SEVENTEEN! But throughout the year, I'll hear complaints that certain challenges are too hard to perform or participate in, or this reason or that reason why something is unfair. It's super frustrating to put a lot of work into things for our employee base to have no one participate.

Thanks for listening to my rant, not sure if this was an appropriate thread to post it in but I needed to vent this morning 😂

That's unfortunate, but I suggest that you still make it a positive, big deal for those who participated. They deserve the same special treatment as if there were 600 participants. Maybe a special awards dinner, PR within your hospital system and out in the community. Write a press release for the news with a photo of the winner (you don't need to say how many employees participated). The fact is you do have participants and you are helping them, you are their cheerleader. Embrace what you do have and let your community know.
