I did notice that when I hit a couple of trees there was a light orange stain on the ball that didn’t wipe off, but it washed off. The tackiness that I felt with a new ball was still there after I played the last 14 holes with it (I lost 2 in the first 5 holes).  The cover seemed no worse for the wear. So far positive thoughts on the Elixr. Next I am going to do some chipping and putting at the course practice green and do a session at indoor golf for yardage, launch angle and spin rates. And the answer is I left it on the right edge for a 2 putt for par net birdie

I'm glad you found the sound similar I also compared with Supersoft and found no discernible difference. I thought maybe I don't clean my ears enough.

I gifted a couple sleeves of the OnCore Elixr to a friend who normally plays the Pro v1. He plays daily so I am waiting to hear his thoughts.

Entering the final phase of testing. Used the last brand new Elixir I had the last time out. Hole #1 drove left immediately hit a tree, hard.  Now having some wear on all the balls I will focus on an apples to apples comparison of Elixirs that have various wear against Supersoft, Z Star and Vice Balls that have been used to a similar degree.

I plan on getting 1 indoor simulator visit and at least 27 holes on course before we post our conclusions.

It has been a tough 3 weeks getting out on the course but am playing at my home course tomorrow. I have done some chipping in my back yard and a couple times at the course though. I am interested in a friend's assessment of his gifted 2 sleeves also. Looking forward to telling my thoughts!

I am not totally positive after 62 years, but I guess that he is still being developed! He is a loyal friend, competitive to a fault, trained Chef (Johnson and Wales 1981) working in and around the Boston area as an Executive Chef for 8 years. The first time I played real golf, not just swinging clubs in a field with found golf balls from a local range or golf course, was at Stone E Lea golf course at 16 with a borrowed set of clubs. Then I found a used set of Spalding Elite Irons 2-pw. I continued to play golf (not very seriously for 40 years) mostly playing 2-5 times a year for fun. A 105 average (low 93 Lucky day) and a high of 132 with an eagle from 165. Over the past 5 years I have played more often, and since 2020, have taken a more competitive approach, playing 20-27 rounds a year (once a week). Overall, my average score now is 96 with a low of 88 (twice in the past 2 years) and a much more consistent Iron game with some gifted Ping 710's.

I have only owned 3 sets of irons the Spaulding’s 25+ years, a boxed set of Wilson staffs on liquidation 15+ years and the Ping 710’s I use now. Pretty much the same with Woods Wilson 1200’s 1,3,5 And Taylor made Bubble shafts 1,3,5. When I Retired I celebrated with a fitting for woods and purchased Ping G410 driver and 3W. I never was much for gear as I felt that it’s the player and not the tools. After getting my new tools I have seen a big difference in good –great contact and am really enjoying the game more. MGS has also helped me with other spies thought processes to enhance the most important part of the game “ME”.

So excited to test the the OnCore ELIXR because I am really starting to feel the ball off the club and it seems to be a good fit for my swing speeds around 92. Also to see how it compares to the Callaway Supersoft which I like to play!  The price point is good and want to see if they can reduce the spin off my driver while maintaining the higher spin on High Irons while maintaining that soft feel.

THE UNBOXING  4/28/23

I was so excited when I came home to see the box on the front stairs. When I opened it my first impression was simple box cover (gray scale) with just a little gold. Simple and not flashy.

The words “THE PERFECT FEEL” stands out but not the largest font. I like the idea of feel, because I have started to feel a difference in club to ball over the last few years.

When I picked up the ball the cover seems to have a gripping property, not sticky but similar to rubber but not soft. Something I haven’t felt before on a ball.  

I like their OnCore logo simple with a splash of color.

 It might be a nice look on the box also.

 

 

I compared the dimple pattern to the Callaway supersoft and was similar in the larger med and small dimples, but the Callaway has a hexagon shape and to the eye a more defined look and depth versus a more rounded tapered look.

I would guess that less defined dimples would produce less drag, and the grippe cover might create more spin off the higher irons.

 

Overall, my first impression of quality and looks are really good. Hopefully the promise of enhanced feel around the green, added distance with more accuracy off the tee is legit and they prove to be durable.

 Looking forward to doing some chipping in my backyard and getting on the course with them. Here we goooo!

Oncore Elixr Golf Ball: Final Review 5/26/23

First Impression: 10/10

The OnCore Claim that ELIXR delivers exceptional accuracy and control was my main focus. “A premium cast urethane cover delivers a soft, pure feel off the club face and gives the ELIXR great greenside control, durability and first class performance”.

My game ball is the Callaway Supersoft which matches my 89-94 swing speed. One day on multiple holes I hit both the Elixr and Supersoft so I could compare sound and feel with the same shot. My first impression was they were similar sounding, like a wood bat, with a sweet hit on my Irons (Ping G710) and the same muffled metallic ping off the driver and fairway woods. When hit well the Elixr felt lighter and even noticeably lighter with a slight toe hits. In chipping, the ball felt soft off the wedge and 7iron as well as the putter. The ball seems to hold a line once it starts rolling. It also seemed to roll out more on drives and fairway woods while checking up great on greens. It might be the perimeter weight but also there seemed to be a slight tacky feel to the ball that stayed as long as I didn’t lose it (a coupletimes over 13 holes 

)

Aesthetics: 9/10

I like their OnCore logo simple with a splash of color. Nicely stated and enhances the look of the ball. The box and sleeve have a rich look with the gray scale shades, but It might be a nice look to have the splash of red on the box also. The dimple pattern was similar, to my gamer ball, having large, medium and small dimples, round tapered depth that seemed to be a bit shallower than the Supersoft’s hexagon shape. The cover held up very well even hitting a few trees and gravel/stone cart paths. There seemed to be a stain on the ball, probably from a pine I hit, that did not wipe off but did after a good wash. It really looked unblemished after 13 straight holes. The putting –elixr-- line took some time to get used to but works. The ball looks really good on a tee with the logo on top. Overall I really like the packaging and look.

The Numbers: 20/20

The Elixr outperformed my gamer in every way. The feel, with overall longer drives (less spin) on my last 2 rounds have had 3 over 265(one played like 280) On the tee with the driver and 3 wood (14.5) gaining about 10 yards more from this ball with keeping my ball in the rough more often than woods on bad hits. On upper Irons and wedges the distance seems to be the same but I am definitely getting much more spin. The ball holds the green well and on 5 occasions (2 rounds) the ball actually backed up which almost never happens.

On The Course: 20/20

I am one who never felt that a ball can help your shots. For most of my life whatever ball was in the bag I played. Over the past 6 years I have been playing the Supersoft about 95% of the time for consistency reasons because they match my swing speed. I have noticed more consistent results with it, but was not sure if it was because I was playing more. The OnCore Elixr has changed that in my mind.

Off the Tee: Feel, sound, distance and less slice (more times is just a fade) has put me in less trouble to start. I find myself in more fairways and slight ruff, in playable situations, than in woods taking a drop.

Approach: This is where I noticed the biggest difference for me. I think that I have stopped or backed it up on a green maybe 5 times in the past 2 plus years and have done it 5 times in the last 2 rounds. The ball checks up well with some roll out. The ball flight seems to be straighter with slight toe/heel hits and the overall distance with the high Irons is the same as my gamer.

 

Ball Flight: I usually hit the ball with a high flight with all my clubs and the Elixr maintains that flight constantly. The driver woods and 3 hybrid do seem to roll out more than normal but maintain a good arch flight.

Around the green: I haven’t noticed much difference here because I usually use a 7 iron to bump and run. The roll after the bump is really good but not a noticeable difference from my usual ball. I did try some flop type shots that worked out well so I plan to try more.

Putting: The Elixr feels good off the putter, not heavy with a nice click off the face. It rolls great and seems to hold a line very well. My putting distance has been really good when using the OnCore with not as many short of the hole putts. Definitely fewer than before, could this be confidence and better putting days maybe! Confidence it the putt, I believe, is the name of that game! At first the alignment markings were a slight adjustment because it just seemed to look different. I really can’t put an exact reason it just did. After a few holes with one puts over 10 feet, it didn’t seem to matter.

The Good, The Bad, The In-between: 19/20

As a new tester I really enjoyed the process of being chosen to test the balls. I was so excited when I received the email that I was a tester, but it took way too long to get them. It seems that without a fitting needed OnCore should have been able to ship right away but wasn’t able too. It was really nice that OnCore, owning up to the delay, sent an additional dozen Elixrs as compensation which I appreciated. That shows me that they are customer service oriented which is important when you only do direct orders and shipping. Once I received the shipping notice everything has been super positive since.

Play It or Trade It: 19.5/20

I have a hard time justifying the price of many golf balls such as Chrome Soft $4.15 a ball and that the Super Soft at $2.08 is more palatable. With the Elixr at $2.50 and good discounts with 3dz./ 6 dz purchases $2.35/ $2.10 make the price point very comparable to my gamer. With that being said I really feel that the apparent advantages to my game with the Elixr it is now going to be the one I play. As usual really bad swing days will = Whatever balls I find are in play.

Conclusion:

The OnCore Elixr golf ball seems to back all its claims. I definitely am getting more distance, more roll on landing, and control off the tee. My intermediate and high irons are tracking better on miss hits and great on pure hits. The feel is nice and soft even on slight miss hits. I am seeing greater bite and stopping ability on the greens making me feel I can be more aggressive on approaches. My confidence around the green has increased and especially putting with the Elixr. The OnCore company seems to have made a great ball for the golfer with a high 80’s – low 90’s golf swing who needs some forgiveness with their ball. I can truly see this ball helping me shave strokes off my game with control, distance and more importantly “Confidence”.

Final Score:  97.5/100

Well done on the review !  Love the pics for the pull back shots !  Great feeling isn't it ?

Your findings match very closely to my experiences with this ball when I began playing it last year, and is still my gamer.  Really, really love this ball and recommend it to many people.  

Like you, I converted a golfer friend to OnCore last year, and he has bought in so much that he joined the club and purchased the head covers and hat.

The regular price point is a win, but they run specials frequently as well that can really make it a great value.  For instance, right now they are running buy 2 dozen get one free for Father's Day, and I will probably be stocking up for the rest of the season.

Great write up by the testers.

Being born and raised in Western New York, I wanted to give OnCore balls a try about a year ago.  Before that, I was typically playing Srixon QStar Tour balls (white, yellow and Divide).  I tried both the Elixr balls (2020 and 2022) and found I preferred the 2020 version.  It's a little softer (80 versus 84) with a different dimple pattern (318 versus 350).  I found I got a little more yardage from the 2020 version without losing any of the greenside feel that I typically need to score.  When I had an issue, OnCore's customer service went beyond what was expected to resolve it.  As a result of the ball's performance and how OnCore treated at least this customer, I signed up for their Club OnCore VIP membership this year,

Now, OnCore balls are my go-to golf balls.  I've played their complete line and for my slow-ish swing speed and game, I find the Elixr is a good fit.

Because I am a Team OnCore member, and have been playing various OnCore balls for more than 7 years, I have refrained from posting on any of these OnCore ball test threads until the final reviews were posted. However, now that those final reviews are in, here is a brief summary of my findings and impressions, based on a minimum of 25-30 rounds/each with the three Urethane-cover OnCore balls:

ELIXR (2022 model) — Although the original ELIXR ball was a really decent golf ball, and a good choice for the budget-minded golfer who still demands a premium level Urethane cover, the revamped ELIXR is just a bit better (at least for me). This new ELIXR is just a bit too soft (low-compression) for my tastes, but it’s slightly more firm than the first-generation ELIXR, and as such it makes a good cold-weather ball when that lower-compression feel is desirable. It is still too soft for me once the weather warms-up and once that happens, I switch to one of the Vero ball models (see below for details). Spin and control is better than decent with the ELIXR, but distance is not quite as good on well-struck shots, as is to be expected with a lower-compression ball.

Vero X1 — The Vero X1 has been my #1 choice in golf balls since its launch a few years ago, and I still love this ball, but I have gotten some excellent results with the Vero X2, so I tend to go back-and-forth between the two Vero models. If I am not striking the ball perfectly, the X2 can feel a bit too firm for me, and this is when I appreciate the lower-compression of the Vero X1 (about 10-15 points lower in compression compared with the Vero X2). Control and the ability to hold the line in cross winds and into the wind is excellent with both Vero models, and I don’t perceive any significant differences in shot distance between the two Vero ball models, but the Vero X1 is definitely a bit softer in feel. I also slightly prefer the feel of the X1 model on partial shots and putts.

Vero X2 — Just think of the Vero X2 as a firmer-feeling Vero X1 with just a little more octane in the tank!  See above for other comparative comments regarding the differences between the two Vero ball models. When my swing is really “grooved” and I am swinging at my maximum level, the Vero X2 is my preferred golf ball, but when I am a little bit “off”, the X2 can feel too hard (almost, but not quite, “rock-like”). Also, as I mentioned above, the X2, which OnCore advertised as being a 95 compression golf ball at its launch, feels a little bit too hard off of the putter. I believe that the MGS Ball Lab found the Vero X2 to be more in the 102 compression range.

I picked up 3 dozen of the 2020 Elixr in yellow with their buy 2 get 1 sale.  I have been super impressed so far.  They feel great, my ball speeds are up a bit over my regular gamer, spin is right in line with what I'm use to and it's one of the brightest colored yellow balls I've ever seen. I'm not sure why they don't make the newer version of the Elixr in yellow, but as long as they keep these in stock I will keep buying them.

 It might be a nice look on the box also.

 

I compared the dimple pattern to the Callaway supersoft and was similar in the larger med and small dimples, but the Callaway has a hexagon shape and to the eye a more defined look and depth versus a more rounded tapered look.

I would guess that less defined dimples would produce less drag, and the grippe cover might create more spin off the higher irons.

 

Overall, my first impression of quality and looks are really good. Hopefully the promise of enhanced feel around the green, added distance with more accuracy off the tee is legit and they prove to be durable.

 Looking forward to doing some chipping in my backyard and getting on the course with them. Here we goooo!

 

Oncore Elixr Golf Ball: Final Review 5/26/23

First Impression: 10/10

The OnCore Claim that ELIXR delivers exceptional accuracy and control was my main focus. “A premium cast urethane cover delivers a soft, pure feel off the club face and gives the ELIXR great greenside control, durability and first class performance”.

My game ball is the Callaway Supersoft which matches my 89-94 swing speed. One day on multiple holes I hit both the Elixr and Supersoft so I could compare sound and feel with the same shot. My first impression was they were similar sounding, like a wood bat, with a sweet hit on my Irons (Ping G710) and the same muffled metallic ping off the driver and fairway woods. When hit well the Elixr felt lighter and even noticeably lighter with a slight toe hits. In chipping, the ball felt soft off the wedge and 7iron as well as the putter. The ball seems to hold a line once it starts rolling. It also seemed to roll out more on drives and fairway woods while checking up great on greens. It might be the perimeter weight but also there seemed to be a slight tacky feel to the ball that stayed as long as I didn’t lose it (a couple times over 13 holes)

Aesthetics: 9/10

I like their OnCore logo simple with a splash of color. Nicely stated and enhances the look of the ball. The box and sleeve have a rich look with the gray scale shades, but It might be a nice look to have the splash of red on the box also.

The dimple pattern was similar, to my gamer ball, having large, medium and small dimples, round tapered depth that seemed to be a bit shallower than the Supersoft’s hexagon shape. The cover held up very well even hitting a few trees and gravel/stone cart paths. There seemed to be a stain on the ball, probably from a pine I hit, that did not wipe off but did after a good wash. It really looked unblemished after 13 straight holes. The putting –elixr-- line took some time to get used to but works. The ball looks really good on a tee with the logo on top. Overall, I really like the packaging and look.

The Numbers: 20/20

The Elixr outperformed my gamer in every way. The feel, with overall longer drives (less spin) on my last 2 rounds have had 3 over 265(one played like 280) On the tee with the driver and 3 wood (14.5) gaining about 10 yards more from this ball with keeping my ball in the rough more often than woods on bad hits. On upper Irons and wedges the distance seems to be the same but I am definitely getting much more spin. The ball holds the green well and on 5 occasions (2 rounds) the ball actually backed up which almost never happens.

 

On The Course: 20/20

I am one who never felt that a ball can help your shots. For most of my life whatever ball was in the bag I played. Over the past 6 years I have been playing the Supersoft about 95% of the time for consistency reasons because they match my swing speed. I have noticed more consistent results with it, but was not sure if it was because I was playing more. The OnCore Elixr has changed that in my mind.

Off the Tee: Feel, sound, distance and less slice (more times is just a fade) has put me in less trouble to start. I find myself in more fairways and slight ruff, in playable situations, than in woods taking a drop.

Approach: This is where I noticed the biggest difference for me. I think that I have stopped or backed it up on a green maybe 5 times in the past 2 plus years and have done it 5 times in the last 2 rounds. The ball checks up well with some roll out. The ball flight seems to be straighter with slight toe/heel hits and the overall distance with the high Irons is the same as my gamer.

Ball Flight: I usually hit the ball with a high flight with all my clubs and the Elixr maintains that flight constantly. The driver woods and 3 hybrid do seem to roll out more than normal but maintain a good arch flight.

Around the green: I haven’t noticed much difference here because I usually use a 7 iron to bump and run. The roll after the bump is really good but not a noticeable difference from my usual ball. I did try some flop type shots that worked out well so I plan to try more.

Putting: The Elixr feels good off the putter, not heavy with a nice click off the face. It rolls great and seems to hold a line very well. My putting distance has been really good when using the OnCore with not as many short of the hole putts. Definitely fewer than before, could this be confidence and better putting days maybe! Confidence it the putt, I believe, is the name of that game! At first the alignment markings were a slight adjustment because it just seemed to look different. I really can’t put an exact reason it just did. After a few holes with one putts over 10 feet, it didn’t seem to matter.

The Good, The Bad, The In-between: 19/20

As a new tester I really enjoyed the process of being chosen to test the balls. I was so excited when I received the email that I was a tester, but it took way too long to get them. It seems that without a fitting needed OnCore should have been able to ship right away but wasn’t able too. It was really nice that OnCore, owning up to the delay, sent an additional dozen Elixrs as compensation which I appreciated. That shows me that they are customer service oriented which is important when you only do direct orders and shipping. Once I received the shipping notice everything has been super positive since.

Play It or Trade It: 19.5/20

I have a hard time justifying the price of many golf balls such as Chrome Soft $4.15 a ball and that the Super Soft at $2.08 is more palatable. With the Elixr at $2.50 and good discounts with 3dz./ 6 dz purchases $2.35/ $2.10 make the price point very comparable to my gamer. With that being said I really feel that the apparent advantages to my game with the Elixr it is now going to be the one I play. As usual really bad swing days will = Whatever balls I find are in play.

Conclusion:

The OnCore Elixr golf ball seems to back all its claims. I definitely am getting more distance, more roll on landing, and control off the tee. My intermediate and high irons are tracking better on miss hits and great on pure hits. The feel is nice and soft even on slight miss hits. I am seeing greater bite and stopping ability on the greens making me feel I can be more aggressive on approaches. My confidence around the green has increased and especially putting with the Elixr. The OnCore company seems to have made a great ball for the golfer with a high 80’s – low 90’s golf swing who needs some forgiveness with their ball. I can truly see this ball helping me shave strokes off my game with control, distance and more importantly “Confidence”.

Final Score:  97.5/100

On a side note: I recently gifted 2 sleeves of the Elixr to a friend who is a low to mid 90's swing and a 10 index. His response after playing many rounds was "HE HAS A NEW BALL". He felt he hit a straighter ball with more distance and control. I guess I am part of the OnCore sales staff!!!!

 

 

 

Just an update on my play with the Elixr! My overall game handicap has dropped from 22.4 to 20.7. I am still gaining more consistent length, and less spin on miss hits, with more fairway hits. I am still seeing more spin on my high irons with the ball stopping with minimum roll out. EnCore Elixr is still my ball of choice.
