How'd you play?

Ok, today I’m over my vacation, and shot a nice +5 round. Had a few near misses on putts that lipped that could have fallen in,and that doggone double bit me again, but only once. That’s one too many if ya ask me.

Well I had an, umm, interesting round ...

Front 9: every tee shot was in or just off the fairway .. but, otoh .. nothing else was working too well..!

Back 9: tee shots started getting blocked out to the right (solid contact but heading right, fast ) .. the funny part is 2 of 3 of those got a solid tree wedge back into the rough and other one I found just outside a fairway bunker on the adjacent hole .. and, otoh, this time .. everything else started to work ok enough...

...so I guess I'm on my way to becoming a "real" golfer

Solidly average round today, not a lot of flash, but very workman. Except for the never to be denied double. I just can’t seem to have a round without at least one of those dirty dogs. Actually a couple good up and downs too, not my normal area of good play.

Shot 45, had a nice round going than the last 3 holes I went double, double, double. Since I haven't played in 6 days I would have expected that to happen at the start of the round. Oh well try again Monday. Have a wonderful day everyone.

Rough nine today. 52. Short game was way off. Had one hole where I launched out of a green side bunker. No room to punch. Then follow up chop didn’t make it. 1 double, 2 triples, 1 quad. Was rough. Did almost make a 30 ft birdie on a par three. Had some other putts I should have also made. So is the randomness of putting sometimes. Was 1” from falling. Driver was decent lofted up to 10* today. Hit some baby draws but distance was pretty short compared to where I have been able to hit it. I think I’m gonna commit to an EF T1100 70g in Stiff or Aldila rouge white to see if a slightly different profile can help. My best driving days were in a blue rdx 6.0 at 70g so hoping this gets me close.

Oh what a day... this could have been. 36/39 at Cimarron this morning. 1 bogey and 1 birdie on the front, one DB and 1 bogey on the back. But I had seven great looks at birdie and shot a BIG Goose Egg making any of those.  The one I made on the front was from almost 20 feet away. This sounds like Deja Vu from a previous post . 

I feel like my quest for a 72 (or better) is much like my scoring opportunities of late - at the lip looking in .  But, looking at the scorecard, I did have 2 really good scramble pars that could have easily been bogies.  Just gotta stay patient.

Season low 44 for 9 holes at Langston today. Only hit 3 fairways and 2 greens in regulation but I was chipping very well inside of 30 yards. The big news is there was only one 3-putt in 9 holes, if I could do that every time I played I'd be a happy man. Had par on both the par 5s which was nice.

Definitely left a couple of shots out there, but keeping the "blow up" holes to a pair of 6s is big victory for me. Feeling good, don't know if I'll play tomorrow though.

Two very frustrating rounds on Thursday and today. 
I hit the ball as well as I can but ended with scores of 84 & 85. Putting is usually the best part of my game but because it’s golf, now is when my stroke has chosen to desert me.

I couldn’t make a thing Thursday, and today? Missed a 4 ft. par putt on 1, birdied 2, missed a one foot par putt on 3, and continued to miss from inside 5 feet all day.  
Just to put a bow on the day… I had a 10 foot birdie putt on the 17th and 3 putted for bogey. At that point, all I could do was shake my head.

With back to back 74's at the one course and this 75 today, it looks like you're trending in the right direction, Bill. Congratulations on the PB on your handicap, too! That's awesome!

Thanks Jason.  With the back healthy and lot's more practice and play, I'm playing as good as I can ever remember.

That stinks but my big takeaway was that you were bombing the greens.

Played this evening and tee to green couldnt be much better. I had 1 bad tee shot that was a solidly hit, but pulled driver into a hazard.   Approach shots were mostly on line and yardages were mostly right on a club distance, very few yardages between clubs.

The putting stroke remains a challenge as my distance control is horrible right now.  A lot of really good birdie chances in the 8 - 15 foot range and none were converted (including about a 4'er on a par 3).  When i wasnt consistently 5' short i lipped out about 4.  As in, all the way around the hole and right back at me, lip outs.  I ended up with five 3 putts. 

The shot of the day for me was a 110 yard pw to about 10" to save bogey.  I hit the drive too good and it went through the fairway at the dogleg and was a lost ball.  To save time instead of heading back to the tee i took a 2 shot penalty drop. I hit the wedge pure and watched it fade about 5 yards toward the pin. I was expecting another lip out but i drained that 10"er.

Played Heatherhurst GC, Brae this morning with my dad. 8:10am tee time, which meant I had to get up way too early on a Sunday (I'm not a morning person for any reason). After back to back 100+ scores (something I haven't done for a long time), I got back to a more normal score. 49/44/93 today from the whites, 5980 yards. I kept the triples and worse away today which was a good thing. I even managed a birdie on the back nine.

Hole 15, par 3 playing 186 today. Slight drop to the green from the tee (maybe 2-3 yards adjustment) with a large bunker in front of the green, inline with the tee. Front pin, so carrying that bunker was imperative. Probably the best 5 iron I can really ever recall hitting. The lesson I had yesterday working on my wrist action along with my hip rotation paid off for sure. Beautiful little baby draw (my natural shot shape when I strike a shot correctly) coming from over the right fringe to within about 5-6 feet. Sunk the putt for the birdie.

Course was in fantastic condition, thanks to all the rain we've had this summer. Now to get working on that wrist roll and hip turn action to get it burned into my memory and more importantly my bodies memory.

You make a good point here.

I don’t know why I dwell on the negative rather than take what was positive from a round. This game is supposed to be fun.

That said, desperate times call for desperate measures, lol. I went to the putting green today with my old warhorse. If you look at my sig, you’ll see the Cameron 5.5 is in a timeout until further notice and my Yes! Tracy is back in the sack.

Between work and the heat it had been awhile. Decided to deal with the heat wave and play today. 

I couldn’t figure out the greens today and missed multiple good birdie putts and had a 3 putt. Really need to my new putter to arrive . Combine that will some bad pitches and and few fat iron shots I definitely threw shots away. But did hit the driver pretty well hitting 8 of 14 fairways and a few of those where good drives that just went though the fairway. But 2 doubles and 3 bogies adds up the 79 which with the lack of playing/practicing lately I will take.

Had one of my best rounds of the year yesterday. 38-38 at Windmill Lakes with @MattF. On the back I was even through 15 and had a bogey-bogey-bogey finish, with two of them being 3-putts. But it was actually a good putting day as I had 8 one-putts (2 birdies, 6 U&Ds)

As @DiscipleofPenick mentioned above, we played yesterday at Windmill Lakes. Blue tees 6504 yards, except for the first hole because the tent sale was on.

I went 46/42 88 which wasn't good but certainly not bad either. I hit some really good shots and some really bad ones too.

Today is sim day and I play again tomorrow and Thursday.

I've been concentrating on being a better friend to myself. The same way I wouldn't chastise or castigate one of my friends for making a mistake, I'm trying to give myself the same grace and eliminating negative self talk when I screw up. I tried it on Saturday when I played and had my best 9 holes of the season.

I had one double that was the direct result of hitting a ball above my feet….I’ve already said in the hardest shot thread that this shot is the most difficult for me.   Topped this one and it went into the deep stuff (3ft deep) but right next to the cart oat so I was able to hit it about 6 inches back onto the cart path which fortunately rolled to the other side of the path.  I need to figure out how to effectively hit the ball when it is significantly above my feet.  

Couple of penalty strokes, a couple of bad chips, and a 3 putt led to the other 6 bogeys.  overall, a good ball striking day and a good putting day.

Even with the short first hole, Arccos said the course was playing a hair under 6600 and several we weren't getting much, or zero, roll out.

This isn't s typical swiss town that most imagine being in the Alps. We have year round golf and it has been 35 plus the last week and no real end in sight.

With my TGC having dropped coverage of the BMW and not even airing the US Amateur final, I started getting bored watching the Yankee's vs. Red Sox game and the umpire who called balls strikes and strikes balls. It was overcast all day and we were expecting rain that just never came.  So, I checked the tee sheets and, of no surprise, all 4 courses were wide open.  I grabbed the 1400 time, got dressed quick like, jumped in the cart and headed to Granite Falls South.

I played an optic yellow AVX against a PV1. In addition to the extra practice, I wanted to see how ball flight compared.  AVX 39/34 and the PV1 40/39.  Yes, a -2 on the back nine with 3 consecutive birdies that included a "close encounter" on the 171 yard, par 3 #17. 

I've recently put the AVX into play having purchased a box of new 2021 at our community garage sale this past spring and forgetting I had them. They are definitely lower trajectory off the tee than the PV1 but from there in, I don't notice much difference. I'd say distance is really close just based on best H2H drives from yesterday.  I played the equivalent of 36 holes in 2-3/4 hours.

On our trip to Oregon last week, we had a free day between Dr. visit and wedding, so my wife and I played golf at Springhill CC in Albany.  We played it once before a couple of years ago and liked the track.  Both of us didn't play very well; I shot 88 with a couple of doubles and a triple, mostly due to unfamiliar grass, greens, and green speed.  Drove the ball fairly well, but I had five 3-putts because the greens were much slower than ours.  

We got home yesterday afternoon in the midst of very unhealthy smoke levels from fires near Spokane, but after being in the car for 6 hours we decided to play 9-holes.  On the longer of our two nines, I shot a 2 over 39... glad to be back on "normal" greens even if it is smokey here.

I played in league last Wednesday and walked away disappointed again.  My game just isn't as sharp as I want it to be.  Week in and week out I'm consistently shooting 41-43 for 9 holes (not terrible but not great either).  Problem is, it's just enough of a miss that I'm not moving up in rankings and it's getting frustrating.  Went to the range and hopefully worked out the hitch in putting and also in consistency for approach shots.  We'll see what this Wednesday brings.
