Car Buying Thread..Questions/Comments/Suggestions/Deals..etc

Congrats on the purchase CG2! It's so tough for me to decide on a car because I always want something out of my price range and I have a hard time coming to terms with buying something that I don't love.

Thanks. I hear you.

It was the same when I bought by Camry 3 years ago. I had sticker shock at some of the SUVs as it had been 10 years since I bought my 06 Highlander.

So I decided to save some bucks and settle for the sedan vs a SUV. And I had really come to regret it the past year. As it was getting tougher and tougher for me to get in and out of.

So after my road trip to Ohio two weeks ago and actually enjoying spending almost 16 hours total on the road. I decided it was time to at least start looking.

Fortunately it was a good time from dealer discounts stnsdpoint and interest rates compared to 3 years ago.

So it all came together. Don't give up and more than anything don't settle. Wait for the right time to get what you actually want.

Glad to be done dealing with Car Sales people. As someone who makes his living in sales. I'm ashamed to be cast in the same lot with some of those people.

Anyway. It ended up well!!

I loved the F150. But I have no practical reason for a truck, other than, just because. Don think that would have flown with SWMBO!

Although kind of reminds me of the Brad Paisley song, "I'm still a guy". Ha

Bought my wife the Hyundai Tuscon last year, compact, sporty and will fit 2x4x8's easily with the seats down. They are sub 25k used for last years model with not many miles. Not sure if your still looking after the audi debacle but my wife drove the q5, the jeep cherokee, and the tuscon and liked the tuscon. I think the tech features are what sold her. Android auto and apple carplay are nice

Price source was a quick check on Carvana

Glad you chose Hyundai, they are, in my opinon, the most underrated car brand.

For anyone else looking, do checkout Hyundai, I had a great experience at their dealership last year and their features for the price are some of the best. Warranties match the best in the industry as well.

Dude i lusted after the Stinger hard but the one I wanted was out of my range.

but the V-6 is a bit of a gas hog.

My FIL has one and he gets about 36mpg when he drives down to Florida...I got 18.5 and 19.5 in my pig. I'd take the Santa Fe if I could afford one.

That's a Kia, but I hear you. The one that I'd get is about $50K and for that money you're in Corvette territory.

The Santa Fe only comes with a V-6 and the EPA Hwy mileage is 25mpg.  The Tucson with the low HP engine gets 30 mpg.  I could see possibly getting mid-30's with the Tucson, but not the Santa Fe.

That's what he reported to me...but, he's in his early 70's and drives like he's in his 80's. The speed limit is in no danger of him exceeding it or even getting close.

Well... we are headed to the dealer in about an hour.  My wife drove a car last weekend, and she liked it.  It's not quite the unicorn that she was looking for, but the dealer brought the car over to her mechanic which she trusts implicitly and he said Buy it.

She won't buy anything new, and we have been hitting all the dealerships for the past few weeks trying out various small SUVs.  We even stopped in Portland on one of out trips this summer.  Although she really liked the Audi Q5, her mechanic said No.  So, it looks like we are picking up a 2017 Volvo XC60 T5 Inscription model.  Hope it all goes well; I hate this part of the negotiation.

Good luck. I hate the experience and would prefer (fill in the blank): as an example, root canal, ............., etc. etc.

Good luck. So glad I'm done with that process. Is I'm just enjoying the ride and the world of Sirius radio. Haven't had to listen to the local talking heads talk about the same thing 7 days a week.

Much, much bigger!!  When I was younger, I didn't have money for an expensive house.  Still don't.

Other than my first car, which was a '56 Chevy 2-door post blue/white that I bought for $200, this is the first car that I paid cash.  Wish I still had that Chevy.  :(

Not buying a car but car related. Finally decided that I don’t really need a warranty on my toy...so it gets dropped off tomorrow for a rework on the blower, new injectors, long tube headers, full exhaust and a new tune. Nothing less than 925 rwhp will be acceptable. Should run just over 10 seconds at the track.

After reading this thread, I'm going to hire @GSwagto represent me 😉.  On our return leg from McCall, ID a week ago, the transmission on my 2006 Dodge CTD began acting up.  The fairly common, low cost fix (pressure governor switch) does not look like it's going to work for me.  The 48RE has long been the weak point on Dodge trucks (funny how you find out these things years after you buy). My local shop is quoting $5500 😲 for R&R with a rebuilt transmission that has improved components.  Recently, I've been toying around with replacing this truck with a 2016+ Ford F150 with the 3.6L twin turbo.  Oh well, looks like I'll just repair the Dodge and wait a few more years to amortize this expense.

Don't want to derail the thread, but if anyone on the forum has replaced a 48RE, I'd like to chat about it via PM.

  • 7 months later...

I have the go ahead for a new vehicle.  With 3 small children an SUV is really my only option.  I've driven several and have narrowed down to a 2016 Acura MDX or a 2016 Volvo XC90.  I love the look of the Volvo, but the Acura actually drives a bit nicer.  The Volvo is also about $7,000 more and I'm just not sure I can justify that.

Anyone have any experience with these models?

I have the go ahead for a new vehicle.  With 3 small children an SUV is really my only option.  I've driven several and have narrowed down to a 2016 Acura MDX or a 2016 Volvo XC90.  I love the look of the Volvo, but the Acura actually drives a bit nicer.  The Volvo is also about $7,000 more and I'm just not sure I can justify that.
Anyone have any experience with these models?

I’ve had neither but as the father of kids ages 5,7, & 8 I have some experience with the family truckster. Consider getting a minivan. The ease of having sliding doors that can be opened and closed from the driver seat at school drop-off cannot be underestimated.

I had a Dodge Durango R/T and it was a pretty sweet ride but my wife didn’t like driving it so we traded it in for a Honda Odyssey and I couldn’t be happier. Doesn’t look as cool but better gas mileage and convenience trumps style any day.

Thanks for the reply - definitely understand where you are coming from with the automatic sliding doors.  Gas mileage on the two I'm looking at is actually comparable and get around 20 city and 27 highway.  (Volvo getting 22 city and 26 highway)

I'm hoping my wife takes the minivan leap whenever she chooses to trade in her GMC Acadia.  There's also times that I'm driving clients around so I'd like to stay with something a bit more "businessy" if possible.

My wife and I drove the Acura RDX and the Volvo XC60; she didn't need/want a bigger ride.  She liked and bought the XC60, but it was used, a 2017 model.  I like everything about it but the seats, but I don't drive it much.  She really wanted the Audi Q5, but the dealer was a jerk.

Yeah, a minivan wouldn’t be the right vibe for clients.

I’ve always been a fan of Swedish imports having owned 3 Saab’s but now we are a Honda family and I love the reliability. Although I like the styling of the Volvo more, the reliability and the price difference would have me leaning towards the Acura.

I don't have first-hand experience with the models you mentioned either, but I've seen the value of Volvo's drop like bricks (depending on model and year) whereas Acura seems to do pretty well in that regard - I mean, it's a nicer Honda so there's a certain reputation of longevity and reliability that seem to go with it. I don't think those two characterizations are normally at the top of the list for Volvo even though they still make a good car.
