Always used a hybrid and a 4 iron at the upper end. Keep seeing a graphite shafted 3 or 4 iron in peoples bags and in our demo sale at the end of the year.  With my AMT reg flex steel shaft in my 4 iron, it seems to go higher and so a lower launch 4 iron might be a better option than a stock AP2 4 iron.
Will have to try a few Tensei shafted 4 irons on a LM this Fall and order something. Sub 70 looks nice. The Titleist T200 or T300 looks nice too.

Don’t know what grip you have, but I went smaller grip and lighter grip pressure to let the club work.  My putting struggle is face control on shorter putts as like you I try to steer and struggle with the shorter movement of the putter.  Don’t know what what type of tempo you have in you stroke, but a quicker tempo might also help take out the steer.

So I just saw this post 15 minutes after I posted about struggling with putts inside 6 feet. I have a Scotty Newport 2.0 with a thin pistol grip… off to the putting green I go!!! 👍

I'm new to golf this year and would like to start thinking about upgrading some of my hand me down clubs but I'm suffering from selection paralysis.  So many choices, and so many options within those choices.  I don't like spending money on myself and I'm always hesitant to replace what isn't broken, y'know?

I completely understand the feeling. I've got a slightly newer driver that I was gifted that I'm trying out at the moment, but everything currently in my bag is from around 2007. The irons and wedges will be getting new shafts over the weekend as long as FedEx doesn't fail me, but I'm comfortable with everything in the bag. It's hard for me to spend money on myself so justifying the cost of new clubs hasn't really been on the radar.

I look back on my sets which I keep to decorate my finished basement.

Sets evolve as we play them, but one tends to think of the numbered iron set as the name of the whole set.

I've got pretty good separation in my last four.  1984, 1997, 2009, and 2021.

Naming them by the iron set, that would be Wilson 1200GE, Titleist DCI 962, Mizuno MP52, and Titleist T100.

In practical terms, unless you play almost every day, it takes a while to wear out a set of irons.

With fresh grips, I could play with any of the sets and probably not experience a huge performance difference.

I completely understand both of your thoughts.  While I have newer clubs in my bag,   I Don’t change clubs often and when I do it is primarily a flip of current clubs for another used set with funds I have saved up from selling other clubs.  Basically no real cash outlay from savings.  Some people are happy with the clubs they have and that is perfectly acceptable; new clubs doesn’t increase the enjoyment of the game or necessarily make you play better.   Yes, new clubs are nice and shiny and if you like shiny, buy new clubs.

In hindsight, I’d probably go back to my Cleveland TA7 tour irons because I don’t think  anything since then has done magical things to my game.   I’d probably still game my G400 as it is an improvement but I don’t see a reason to change it out for anything newer.   I like my hybrids, and they are older models, so they aren’t going anywhere. I don’t generally swap wedges simply because I am cheap/frugal.    I enjoy swapping putters so,that could change at any moment

Debating cutting my season after this weekend to get a good trade in value on clubs to fund the 2022 bag for now. Fairway Wood, hybrid and putter are set for some time. Driver is subject to the Dollar Driver Club testing. It will be irons and wedges for the change. Iron set is basically all set and ready to do for 4-PW, question is to go GW in set and add two speciality wedges to fill the gaps, or go three specialty wedges.

... At your level, unless you are playing ill fitting heads and/or shafts, there should be no reason to upgrade until you feel you are ready. And then a fitting will certainly help you make up your mind. One of two things will happen in your fitting: you will either be inconsistent enough that which new clubs you hit in any given category won't make much of a difference OR one and maybe two club heads and shafts will stand out from the rest. But in the meantime, playing your hand me downs until you feel like you want new clubs while continuing to improve is never a bad idea.

New experiments are on the brain.  Just in time for the last month or so of the golf season.  I'm clever that way.

Iron shafts are the topic of mental gyration.  I've picked up a couple NV95 shafts to try, and a couple Fuji Pro 115 Tour Spec shafts.  I have a set of 370 bore clubheads that have been lying around for a dozen years or so, I've installed one of the Fujis in a 6 iron, and will plug the NV95 into another club, start banging them around the course after the Ryder Cup event later today.

I also have been thinking about taking the plunge on a set of Steelfibers, for one of my sets of Ram Tour Grinds.  The current leader in the clubhouse among the array of ideas is getting a set of i110 Regular, intending to hardstep them once into a set of 2-PW TG-898s.

Retail version of Recoil 110s could also be an option.  The Recoils lost out in my graphite iron shaft wars from 4-5 years ago, hit them too high then.  I'm rapidly approaching 58th birthday, don't hit the ball nearly as high as I used to, they may be a better fit now.

Oh, and I'm wondering if I should keep riding the SpeedZone I bought a few weeks ago, or suck it up and buy the new 300 Mini.  I seem to hit the OO better than my 460cc sticks.  <shrug>

And blah blah blah.  😁😴

Wedge fitting Tuesday.  Need to check  my gaps from the set gap wedge to my 54 and 60 Vokeys (bent to 55 and 59) now that the gap wedge has been re-shafted with a Steelfiber i95.  May get new wedges but might just put i110s in the Vokeys, we’ll see what the numbers say.

I'm still hot on some Launcher or Launchpad irons. Warmed up on the range the other day next to someone with the first gen HB Turbos and everything he hit was high and dead straight. Gonna have to see what the market is looking like in the winter when prices traditionally come down a bit for gently used clubs from folks who always like to have the latest & greatest. My tennis elbow hasn't acted up at all in quite some time, so I may consider steel again if the price is right.

Try Rock Bottom Golf. They are offering a 50% trade in bonus if you have anything sitting around to get rid of. Turns out I had over $1,300 worth of crap laying around. I printed a label and shipped my old clubs back on a Wednesday and had a store credit by Friday late in the day. Ordered the new Halos that night and had them the following Wednesday.

I got my son the Launch Pad irons when he outgrew his junior set. So of course I hit them and played a few rounds with them. I'd say go Turbos. They feel much better and were longer. Both were equally as straight. The Turbos I had held up a million times better than the Launch Pads.

Haven't tried new wedges for a lot of years.  I will sometimes experiment with a different lob wedge similar to this year, I have the MD5 currently.   But considering trying to Taylormade MG3 in both the SW and LW.

Ladies clubs

My wife said she wants new clubs.  I said:  "You are the 2021 Ladies Match Play Champion and could have won the Ladies Club Championship if you hadn't hurt your back on #13.  Why do you need new clubs??"

I got "the look".  😱

Actually she does; all of her clubs are old and well worn.  When I met her in the early 2001, she was playing PowerBilt Persimmon woods and blades, circa early 1970's.

Her woods are TaylorMade RBZ Stage 2 and the irons are TaylorMade Burner XD men's senior flex.  She could gain better trajectory and more distance with a softer flex.  However, her big complaint with the woods is the channel in the sole... fills up with dirt and grass, and she hates cleaning it after every shot.  She also has a couple of Cleveland CG Black hybrids that she likes.  She plays Titleist Vokey Spin Milled wedges 52, 56, and 60 circa 2010... looking pretty sad.  Thinking Cleveland CBX2.  Probably not in the market for a new putter... yet.  She's playing the Nike Converge putter I tested for MGS 5 years ago.

I think we are going shopping; however, it is E X T R E M E L Y difficult to find ladies clubs that are not a full bag set.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

I am thinking about ladies clubs too. My wife went from two weeks ago having zero interest in golf to this week taking practice swings in the shower. Not quite sure what happened.

She had very specific requirements about the clubs, none of which were related to performance. Clubheads needed to have some gold color in it, so I ended up ordering some older Honma Beres that were reasonable in price, because they are old. Then she wanted all black graphite shafts, so I ordered some Fujikura Pro 65 R2 shafts (parallel tip), might trim them to play slightly softer, will need to think about that. And then an all black bag, zippers have to be black.

Interesting......Well knowing you, I'm not surprised to hear that you didn't start with a box set.  I know you got the Honmas, but keep in mind you can always do paint fill to add in whatever colors she wants in them.

If getting her these clubs makes her happy and allows me to continue my club buying habits, its worth it 😂
