Fresh off my Woods and Wedges round... and employing some of the epiphanies I learned from that Challenge... I backed off my irons.  Rather that trying to stretch a club into the yardage, I made a concerted effort to pull back to the yardage.  12 greens hit, and  4 up and downs. Kinda tells the story right there.  Two birdies, one bogey, one double (pulled 7 iron. Hit side slope of green and kicked into the water hazard).  

Here is one of the birdies.  Note the beautiful MacGregor... 7 iron 155 into the wind... nice and smooth (I made the putt).

First full round with my "new swing" aka where I basically try to play a draw on every single shot. The objective is to drastically shallow the swing and avoid any high, weak and uncontrollable slice.

I lacked consistency with my irons and blatantly shanked two shots. This area of the game is usually my strength, which explains the score, but I will gladly shoot between 90-100 for as long as it takes as long as I don't go back to back to the over-the-top/casting swing.

I finally got to play a new course today that I’ve been wanting to play for a while. This course wasn’t in pristine shape but did have a lot of elevation change which made for some fun holes (and long drives)! I had 4 drives over 300 today with a 330 and a 345 and a downhill par 4. Now I’m even more blown away that the pros hit those distances every day, it took a pretty big hill for me to get there…

First time getting 5 birdies in the same 9. First time having 6 birdies in a round. I couldn't be more pleased with the woods and wedges. Not to mention finally getting my act together. I do well under pressure. Thanks' Sam. 

PS: Getting to play golf with my son was enjoyable. He has gotten so much better. Dam he hits it long though. He had a couple 300 yard drives. He did laugh at me hitting hybrid into a 140 and 155 yard holes. He knew I didn't have irons, but it was still amusing to him.

“Wait a minute!” , you say to yourself reading this, “24 over par and claim 5 birdies? How can that be?” Quite simple. I started the round with 4 straight double bogeys. Made a birdie, then one on a stroke hole for a net eagle. Then went right back to double bogeys. Then on 15 hit a 2 iron from the woods to 6’ and made another birdie net eagle. Then went back to doubles until one of the guys on 18 said, “Loser of the hole buys a round of drinks?” So I made par to his double. 
 

What was wrong with me? Well I worked very hard and very late last night. Okay, I was at a seminar and was at the open bar from 3:30 to 7 and then was taken out by a vendor for dinner and drinks, which we opted for just appetizers, Ubered back to my hotel at the end of the evening, whenever that was. Arrived back at home in time to go directly to the tee box and make 2 practice swings and go. 
 

In actuality, I had a flying right elbow and lost power and directional control, but didn’t realize that for the first 17 holes. Since I rarely have more than 3 beers in a 24 hour period, more than just my swing felt off. 
 

I have another of these to go to in 4 weeks and learned a valuable lesson. Don’t play golf the next day. Although I was not mad at myself. My index has dropped 2 strokes in the last week. This really had no effect on anything, plus I won 2 skins.

If you're in central ohio and havent played Deer Ridge, she's a beauty - lots of elevation changes and when its dry, the greens are crazy hard.  the beauty is most of the par 5s are reachable in 2

It was another hot and humid day in Key West.  Luckily, we have the first tee time, so the humidity was only at 70% and the heat index about 100 at 6:45AM.  The few inches of rain yesterday made it cart path only and no roll on the fairways.  At times, you could feel the humidity rising from the fairways.  It was almost like raining upwards!  The ground crew was focused on pumping out flooded areas.  So the greens were not mowed and the traps were like inground swimming pools.  Those conditions are always a recipe for higher than normal scores.

Today was "average" at best.  I shot my handicap with a flurry of five pars in the last six holes.  I didn't keep score, so I don't have my normal statistics to fall back on.  From what I can remember, it was a decent putting day, improved approach shot performance, and a little worse than normal fairways in regulation.  It all adds up to a normal round.

Closest I've played to breaking 80, and if you take away the NINE(!!) on the 10th, and give me a bogey (which is how I played the hole after hitting two into the garbage), I actually shoot 79, which... Is heartbreaking, lol. 

That being said, it was one of those days where everything comes together. Couple of bomb drives (well, for ME) (294 and 296), some really solid iron play, a 20+ foot putt for birdie, 28 total putts, and a HILARIOUS 237-yard 5-iron (thanks to a tremendous roll-out). 

Plus, I finally got to meet up with @Syks7 and get a look at his Link.1. Unfortunately, we didn't play together, as the timing didn't match up exactly, but we did get to grab a drink afterwards, which made it that much better.

Well well well.

Played my second round with my "new swing" today and... SHOT MY BEST ROUND OF THE YEAR SO FAR!

A nice 81 with 32 putts (no 3-putt). Most of my pars were in tap-in range and my game was overall balanced. I incurred a penalty stroke for bogey on the 17th hole while I was already thinking about breaking 80, first mistake right there... My drive landed in the right rough near some sparse trees, in a spot where I often find myself on this hole and is not usually associated with trouble, but I never found it! The penalty crushed my break-80 hopes as the 18th hole is the hardest of the course and a bogey there is not the end of the world.

I'm finally finding some consistency and I came into the day feeling confident having shot 81 two days before.   Like @GolfSpy SAM I came damn close to breaking 80.  I was in the hunt all day and just had a few up and downs not drop.  I needed to finish birdie birdie to hit 79 and gave it a go.  Got the birdie on 17 (which I've never birdied before), hit a no damage fairway finder on 18, a superb 3 hybrid (went 230), the chunked the chip... hit the resultant shot to 15 ft, then burned the edge to leave a tap in bogey.  I'd almost be mad but I hit 5 great shots in a row, one bad one, then two decent ones.    That's a solid stretch for me so not much to complain about.   Two actual birdies (one of which is a net eagle) and four more net birdies.

The only bad hole stretch for the day was on 11/12.  Hit a decent drive.  Was all lined up for an 80 yard wedge in when my 80+ year old playing partner walks onto the green stands in front of the pin holds up both hands and yells for me to make a field goal.    I politely asked for him to move and it took an escalating series of gestures to get him to move out of the way.  I wish it hadn't but it pulled me out of my focus and I flubbed the chip, managed to get bogey.  Fuming, I then doubled the next hole (a short par 3).  Part of me wants to blame the older guy, but the rational side of me knows that I should let something so minor pull me out of my focus.  No one to blame there but myself.

Took me a couple of days to get this round in, due to work schedule and weather.

Played the front 9 earlier this week and hit 8 of 9 greens, and 4 of 7 fairways for a 37.

Played the back 9 today and kept the momentum going. Hit another 8 of 9 greens, and 5 of 7 fairways for another 37.

Only blemish on each 9 was a bogey where I missed the green, and then 2 putted.

Have been playing a "new to me" set of irons, and with the range time I put in to get distances dialed in, it is now starting to pay dividends.

Also, I played yardages to either the center or the back of the green, depending upon where the trouble areas were if you missed.

Have a tee time for both Sunday and Tuesday at different courses, but the weather here will need to cooperate to get the Sunday round in. Forecast is for rain all day long.

No irons challenge played Clearbrook GC 9 holes followed by Cream Ridge GC blue tees 43-48. The giant glass of bourbon I had between the 9 holes was probably a contributing factor in losing 6 balls on the 2nd 9.

A day after a 73, and my handicap index dropping a stroke as a result, Saturday's round was was the outcome of a poor swing mechanics and trying to force shots.  Also, it was 99 Houston Heat.  But no excuse other than I realized how out of shape I am.  

My fatal flaw yesterday was swaying off the ball, rather than posting in my left knee.  Over the top downswing and shot hilarity ensued.  

One positive outcome, was giving the MacGregor MT86's a really good workout on mis-hit performance... and they did well trying to "save" all my bad swings and poor contact.
