Not the number I wanted to post for my first VCT score, but happy to be doing this with y'all. It was a driving wind the entire day with a 100% chance of rain at some point during the round. We debated on canceling the round, but this was round 3 of our Club Cup Championship, and since the course didn't close despite the weather, it was game on. All 5 groups got through the front 9 nice and dry, but I couldn't take advantage of it despite hitting 4 FIR and bagging a COTP.

 

Then the heavens opened up and straight punished all of us for our stupidity. My back 9 (and my back) didn't fare much better than the front save for a brilliantly played par 5. I had passed the point of caring 3 holes prior and just wanted to get off the course to something close to dry and warm. Needless to say, my swing was....well....carefree. Best drive of the day, but the things that made me most happy was the bunker shot that stopped 2 inches from the cup for a tap in birdie. That at least made the drive home less of an angry one....if only just slightly.

Low round of the year at Whispering Creek - heck, tied low round of the year period and one of my best.  Putter was on fire - 28 putts, 8 one putts, 10 two putts and was dropping them in from distance.  That Aim Point lesson has paid off.

Mind you, I just celebrated 18 months of sobriety. This is a course I've played with little success until now.

After the round, I looked at one of the other guys & said, "This course used to seem a lot tougher."  To which he asked, "Were you drinking then?"

The good: I will never complain about an under par round, not ever. It was all good.

The bad: Real first world problem here, but I missed 2 birdie putts inside 6 feet. That would have allowed me to top my PB, the one I set last week. Again, there is nothing to complain about.

The freaking Awesome!: These Titleist irons. That is all.

Planned to play solo but ran into a friend and his 15/16 year son and friend who played the front 9 with us. Not as planned but I enjoy playing with anyone honestly so it was a good time. Went 42 front 46 back. With the sun setting around hole 16 we started rushing to finish and got a little sloppy. My driver absolutely stole the show today! Hit 9 fairways and the missed fairways were only a few feet off. Best day with my driver I believe I've ever had with 64% of fairways hit. Putter was runner up with 33 true putts from/on the green but Texas wedged probably 3 more from about 3 feet off. No drops or OB shots. Short chips and a few putts that were left pitifully short kept me from low 80s. Eagle putt (one from about 2ft off the green) saw the bottom of the cup but rolled past with too much speed to drop but.  Missed the follow up birdie on the low side after watching two putts break that way so that's on me smh...par.  Focus on tempo and contact paid off greatly today this is a low round for me (3rd best).

Prework, golf work out.  Early round, 1st 6 holes were socked in with fog, Off the tee was good today, around the greens better (which was a good thing since I only hit 8 in regulation).  Approach is the new project as it seems this is my sore spot in the game right now.  I will have to figure out how to practice everything so my game gets better all the way around.  I was hoping today would've been better than Mondays round for match play, but it wasn't to be.  Best part of the round Hole 6 is the hardest hole on the course narrow par 4 dog leg right, near 90º about 1/2 way out.  Normally this is a make par or bogey be happy and move on.  I left my tee shot out to the right, had about 150 to the hole from under the trees, played a nice punchy cut that just carried over the green. about 25' to the hole from the fringe, put a good roll on it and I thought I just missed it on the high side, the ball stalled for about 1 second on the back edge of the cup and fell in!!!! Only natural birdie of the day to complement the 4 other pars I made on holes that I stroke on.  Looking forward to more golf this weekend.

Monday, took the day from work to get in some golf.  Playing with my "old guy" group, the two brothers combined for about 155 years, but they are great company and a crack up on the course.  Play was pretty slow/steady on the front scrambled for some pars, lipped out a few to make bogey 4 of 9 greens in regulation.  #8 had about 20' for birdie and drained it....#10 is my nemesis hole down hill narrow OB left and a deep gully on the right (lateral).  One of these days I will actually par this hole!!!.  My miss is a dead pull, and I swear this is the only hole at Laguna I have this issue.  Tried to correct by playing my 3 wood, the result was a pull that left me with a terrible lie and about 200 yards out, got in the greenside bunker (from this one you can't see anything if you are at the bottom (I was) because it stretches about 20' up.  Got out but left myself about 60' to the pin...DOUBLE B.  #11 was my long drive of the day, downhill slight dogleg right, fueled with the anger from the double on 10, the golf ball paid for it, drove it slightly over the green just to the right.  Had 2 other bogeys on the back +3 on the front +4 on the back for a +7.  And now for the 1st time in (too long to mention)  I have my handicap below 11, YAY ME!!

Played 27.  The first 18 was a decent round, with the third 9 being a little tired in my shots and frustrated with missing some easy shots with short clubs.  The second nine being a part 36 I ended up shooting a 38 that should have been easily a 34.  smh  Regardless, swings starting to round out better with some of the changes that were made.  Well, with everything but the damn Driver!!!

Honestly did not even see that match play field selection. Definitely wasn't intended to select that. To say that was a career round for me is an understatement. It's one of those rounds where I have to decide if I go back out and try to repeat it, or retire my clubs and go out on a high.

It's rare that I follow up a great round with a much better than average round.  After breaking 80 (79) on Tuesday, I followed that up with an 81 today.

My irons were not as crisp today.  My chipping and approach shots continued to save me with five up and downs.  The end result of that good chipping was only 27 putts.

I hit a couple of drives over 180 yards (which is good for me) and half of the missed fairways were by less than a foot.  

I'm hoping I've stumbled on something in my game that will get me out of the Summer Doldrums I experienced.  TIme and more rounds will only tell!  I'm just hoping it holds on for one more week (and maybe three if we make the Match Play playoffs).

Thank god the putter was working.  5 fairways and 3 Greens hit.  5 strokes lost due to penalty.  All in the first 10 holes.   Played decently well the last 4 holes.  
 

30 putts was by best putting round of the year and had two others that were half in before deciding to not fall.

Hit 16 greens, but could only manage even par. Putted good on the front, but poorly on the back! I had 33 putts and one three putt. Normally I have 28 to 29 putts! Ouch let a good one get away!
